Charles Rayburn Baccus

December 12, 1932 - April 25, 2021

Charles is preceded in death by his parents Lander and Edna Baccus, an infant daughter, Priscilla, and a brother, Bobby Gene Baccus. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Charlene Humber Baccus, his son Rev. Steven Ray Baccus (and Donna), his daughter Denise Kay Baccus Starbird (and Edwin), his grandson Steven Matthew Baccus (and Mary Beth), his granddaughter Christina Michelle Starbird, and three great-grandchildren, Anslee, Addie, and Raylan. He is also survived by his sisters Annie Baccus Cartwright (and Kenneth) and Nellie Baccus Lenahan (and Jerry), and his brothers Raymond Baccus and Robert Leroy Baccus.

Charles has been known as “Chuck,” “Charlie,” “Ray,” or “Rayburn” depending on whether he was known as a work associate, friend, or family member. He was the oldest of 6 children. He and Charlene have been married for 65 years. He served as a Military Policeman during the Korean War. He often worked two jobs in his earlier adult years in order to support and care for his family. He was a tool and die maker, and he went back to college when he was in his forties. He worked as a supervisor and in the engineering department at Federal Mogul (NTN-Bower). After retiring from the company he worked as engineering support for the sales department of the Cincinnati Milacron Company. During his employment with Milacron Charlene was able to travel with him as he worked in several cities around the Southeastern United States. He also made a few work trips to Germany. After he retired for the second time he then became the mayor of Twin, Alabama after the town incorporated. He found a great deal of fulfillment in this non-salaried civic role and he got a kick out of being called “Mayor.” He has always been gentle, kind, and honest. Charlene can attest to the deep stubborn streak he had, and this has been passed on to his children and grandchildren. For the last few years vascular dementia has taken its toll on him. The family gradually saw a brilliant mind become more and more confused. However, he remained gentle and kind - and stubborn - so the family considers it a great blessing that his nature did not change. Charles had a quiet faith and a calm steadfastness, and because of Jesus his life in God’s love will never end. The family remains forever grateful for the positive and loving impact he has had on their lives, and on the lives of so many other friends and acquaintances.

Visitation for friends and family will be Wednesday, April 28 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bowen Funeral Home. There will be a private graveside service at the Griggs Place Cemetery, for family members only, immediately following visitation. Donations in Charles’ memory are requested to be made to the Griggs Place Cemetery Fund ℅ Vernalee Harbin, 470 State Hwy. 129 South, Winfield, AL 35594.
