Helen L. McCollum, age 71 of the Hubbertville community, passed away Monday, March 16, 2020 at her residence after an extended battle with cancer. Helen was born on January 25, 1949 to William Raymond McCollum and Willie Nell Blanchard McCollum. She was a 1967 graduate of West Highland High School in Fayette, AL. Helen was self-employed running her own business and serving the public for over 30 years.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Chylciale “Hope” McCollum Washington of Jacksonville, AL, her sisters, Bonnie McCollum of Eldridge, and Dean Hollingsworth of Winfield, and Remy, her faithful four-legged companion along with a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond McCollum and Willie Nell McCollum and two sisters, Hazel McCollum and Mary Jo Wilson.  

Helen’s family will receive family and friends on Saturday, March 21, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with a graveside service and burial to following at the McCollum Family Cemetery.

Mr. Edwin Dale Brasher better known as Dale, age 88 of Winfield, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at the Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham. Mr. Brasher was a member of the Winfield First Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Fayette County High School. He attended college and played football at Holmes Community College. He was also a football letterman at University of Tulsa, where he played in the Gator Bowl. At the University of Tulsa, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Education. He earned his Master’s degree from University of Southern Mississippi. His Educational Specialist degree was achieved at Mississippi State University. He also served in the United States Army, reaching the status of First Lieutenant in the 101st Airborne Unit. Mr. Brasher was a long-time educator and administrator in the Winfield City School System, and he was the athletic director and head football coach for the Pirates from 1965-1975. Mr. Brasher served as the Superintendent of Education for the school system from 1976 until his retirement in 2002. During his tenure as administrator, Winfield Area Vocational School was constructed in 1976, a new Winfield Elementary School was opened in 1985, Winfield Middle School was established in 1989, and a new Winfield City High School was built in 2002. While as the superintendent, Winfield City Schools stood as a flagship for other school systems in the state and nation. The school system was recognized by Governors Guy Hunt and Fob James. It ranked consistently in top 6 statewide in Stanford Achievement Test Scores during his administration. Additionally, Mr. Brasher has been named in the Mississippi Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951, Mississippi High School Football Hall of Fame in 1951, Mississippi High School Coach of the Year, Hines Community College Sports Hall of Fame, University of Tulsa Gator Bowl Team Hall of Fame, Alabama Association of School Administrators District VII President, Alabama Association of School Administrators Board of Directors, and Alabama Association of School Administrators Superintendent of the Year in 2001.

He was preceded in death by his parents, C. C. “Shorty” and Eunice Hubbert Brasher, wife, Martha Fancher Brasher, sisters, Linda Smith and Sue Davis, and brothers, Billy Ray Brasher, Jake Brasher, Tommy Brasher, Jerry Brasher, and Max Brasher. He is survived by a son, Dale (Kitty) Brasher Jr., a daughter, Beth (Alec) Alexander, grandchildren, Ashley Alexander Harris, Austin Alexander, Dale Brasher III, Mack Brasher, and Wendy Brasher Raby, great grandchildren, Evelyn and Henry Harris, Jackson and Carter Raby, and Dale “Ford” Brasher IV, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Brasher will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. from the Winfield First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Winfield City Cemetery.  The visitation will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. (service time) at the church.     In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dale Brasher, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund at The Citizens Bank of Winfield.  Bowen Funeral Home of Winfield serving the Brasher family

Mr. Harold Ray Howell, age 81 of Winfield, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020 in the Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham. Harold was born on July 5, 1938 to Charles Howell and Exie Hollingsworth Howell. Mr. Howell was a member of the White’s Chapel Church of Christ and served in the United States Army from 1961-1963.

Mr. Howell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue McDonald Howell, sons, Jimmy Howell (Margie) and Terry Howell both of Winfield and a grandson, Blake Howell, sisters, Christene Hollingsworth, Betty Tucker and Nelda Walters, brothers, Roy Howell and Ronald Howell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles White Howell and Exie Catherin Hollingsworth Howell, and a brother, Junior Howell.

The funeral service for Mr. Howell will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. from the White’s Chapel Church or Christ with burial to follow in the adjoining cemetery. Larry Alexander will be the officiating minister. The visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. (service time) at the church. Martha Mae Haney, age 65, of Winfield, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020 at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

Mrs. Haney is survived by her husband, Roger Haney, her daughter, Brandy Richardville (Anthony) of Cullman, grandchildren, Jordan Cain, Desire Ponds, Aysha Miller, Addie Miller, Romen Richardville, Casin Richardville, Joediah Richardville, Jerrion Richardville and Revyn Richardville, sisters, Nelda and Loretta, brothers, Johnny and Frankie and a daughter in law, Melinda Miller Cook of Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer McKay and Wanda Lou Miles McKay, a son, Jody Miller and a grandson, Eli Miller.

The funeral service for Mrs. Haney will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. from the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Cooper Cemetery.
