Mr. Hubbert Steven “Steve” McCaleb, age 79 of Hubbertville passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 in the Ridgeview Health Care in Jasper.

He was a member of Berea Church of Christ, 1959 graduate of Hubbertville High School and the University of Alabama. He attended The University of Alabama where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree. He spent many summers continuing his education in his pursuit of a Master’s degree and becoming highly certified in his subjects of interest. His plethora of abilities ranged from teaching various histories, to Driver’s Education, to Physical Education, to coaching athletes on the basketball court and football and softball fields. Mr. McCaleb began his career with time at Phil Campbell and Sulligent School. He quickly found his way back to his alma mater where he spent 38 years teaching and coaching until his retirement in 2004.

Mr. McCaleb was an active community member in Hubbertville and was devoted to the community and the school, just as his grandparents and parents, Mr. McCaleb donated land to Hubbertville School. The land would serve many purposes over the years ensuring students and athletes of Hubbertville have a rewarding experience during their school years. The land donated in 1984 would come to house the high school softball field and later on the Hubbertville Community Park.

Mr. McCaleb was a philanthropist in his own right. He spent a majority of his life contributing to The University of Alabama and was a fan of all sports. His love of Hubbertville and the University of Alabama often intertwined as he allowed for opportunities for Hubbertville students to join him at the University of Alabama sporting events. Through those events, Mr. McCaleb opened the doors for many students to experience things for the first time. Many built a love for the University of Alabama, just as Mr. McCaleb, but more than that, a mentorship blossomed during these experiences that later in life led to friendships and a continued connection.
